Ponds of Prosperity: Nellore's ₹355 Crore Irrigation Makeover

As part of the Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana (PMKSY), nearly 220 minor irrigation ponds in SPSR Nellore district will be restored at an estimated cost of ₹355.19 crore, benefiting approximately 26,928 hectares of agricultural land.

The initiative falls under the Repair, Renovation, and Restoration (RRR) of water bodies scheme, a key component of the Central government’s Har Khet Ko Pani (HKKP) programme. It aims to revive traditional irrigation sources, improve water availability, and ensure sustainable agricultural practices across the district.

Chairing a district-level Implementation and Monitoring Committee meeting on 3 September 2025, District Collector O. Anand emphasized the need for timely and coordinated execution. He urged officials to adopt a proactive approach to strengthen water infrastructure and enhance irrigation efficiency.

The restoration of ponds and canals under the RRR scheme is expected to significantly improve groundwater recharge, reduce dependence on erratic monsoon rainfall, and provide farmers with more reliable irrigation coverage—contributing to long-term water and food security in the region.
