Saving Water, Saving $50 Cr: Bokaro Steel's Smart STP

Bokaro Steel (BSL) is set to establish a state-of-the-art sewage treatment plant (STP) with a capacity to treat 30 million gallons of wastewater per day, aimed at conserving water and achieving zero liquid discharge for the BSL Township and plant operations.

The facility will process both industrial and domestic wastewater, enabling large-scale recycling and reuse in steel production. At present, BSL consumes 39 MGD of potable water, generating around 30 MGD of wastewater. The new STP will significantly reduce dependence on raw water from the Damodar River—saving 4,000–5,000 cubic metres of water per hour and cutting operational costs by approximately Rs 50 crore annually. The plant will deploy Sequential Batch Reactor (SBR) technology to ensure high-quality treatment standards.

Aligned with national initiatives such as the Swachh Bharat Mission and Jal Jeevan Mission, the project will be complemented by a municipal solid waste management system, making BSL Township Jharkhand’s first urban area with advanced environmental infrastructure.
