Tapping the Godavari: Hyderabad's ₹7,360 Crore Water Future

Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy is set to lay the foundation stone today for Phases II and III of the Godavari Drinking Water Scheme—an important milestone in the ongoing Musi River rejuvenation project.

The ₹7,360 crore initiative will draw 20 TMC (thousand million cubic feet) of water from the Mallanna Sagar reservoir. Of this, 2.5 TMC will be allocated to replenish Osman Sagar and Himayat Sagar lakes as part of the Musi restoration plan, while the remaining 17.5 TMC will be supplied to Hyderabad for drinking water needs, including the refilling of seven intermediary tanks along the route.

Implemented under a hybrid annuity model, the project is expected to ensure uninterrupted daily tap water supply to Hyderabad residents by December 2027. Funding will be split, with 40% provided by the government and 60% by the executing agency.
