Vizag's Water Future: A ₹1,200 Crore Desalination Plant

The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) is fast-tracking the development of a ₹1,200 crore, 100 MLD desalination plant to meet growing industrial water demand and reduce pressure on the city’s domestic water supply.

In a recent review meeting with Andhra Pradesh Urban Infrastructure and Asset Management (APUIAML) and Israel-based IDE Technologies, project feasibility and design were discussed. Officials confirmed that a Request for Proposal (RFP) will be floated shortly.

Planned under a public-private partnership (PPP) model, private players will invest in the project, while GVMC will provide land and core infrastructure. The plant will be powered by a 20 MW solar grid to ensure energy efficiency and sustainability, and will require approximately 25 acres of land.

GVMC Commissioner Ketan Garg noted IDE Technologies' expertise in large-scale desalination, including a 400 MLD plant in Mumbai and a 60 MLD facility in Tamil Nadu. With industrial water consumption in Visakhapatnam exceeding 500–600 MLD, the new facility will help conserve potable water for residential use and ease recurring shortages in areas like Madhurawada and Bheemili.

In its initial phase, desalinated water will be supplied exclusively to industries.
