The Delhi government has set an eight-month deadline to complete the long-delayed Barapullah Phase-III elevated corridor, following the final tree-clearance approval from the Supreme Court-appointed Central Empowered Committee.
The 3.5-km corridor will connect Mayur Vihar-I in east Delhi to AIIMS in south Delhi, integrating with the existing flyover near Sarai Kale Khan. Once completed, it is expected to significantly ease east-west traffic congestion, particularly on NH-24, the DND Flyway, and the Ring Road.
Construction has resumed, with fabrication sites operational and tree removal tenders issued, under the supervision of the forest department. A detailed survey reported that 85 trees will be felled, 87 transplanted, and 161 preserved through selective pruning across divisions.
Initially launched in 2015 with a completion target of October 2017, the project faced repeated delays due to land acquisition issues, environmental clearances, flooding, and inter-agency coordination challenges.
Designed with sustainability in mind, the corridor features pier-supported structures, extradosed bridges, three-lane carriageways in each direction, dedicated cycle tracks, and eight loops to ensure smoother connectivity.
