Transforming Bihar: ₹21,406 Crore Push for Rural Roads & Bridges

On July 24, 2025, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar launched rural infrastructure projects worth ₹21,406.36 crore under the Rural Works Department (RWD), aimed at transforming rural connectivity across the state. The initiatives include the construction of 11,346 roads and 730 small bridges, marking one of the state’s largest rural development drives to date.

The Chief Minister inaugurated and laid foundation stones for multiple projects during a virtual event held at his official residence. A key component of the rollout is the Rural Roads Strengthening and Management Programme, under which the Mukhyamantri Gramin Sadak Unnayan Yojana, introduced in 2024, has seen significant traction.

Under this scheme:

Construction has commenced on 5,047 roads covering 8,893 km, with an approved cost of ₹6,198 crore.

Foundation stones were laid for another 4,079 roads spanning 6,484 km, at a cost of ₹5,627 crore.

Additionally, the Mukhyamantri Gramin Setu Yojana—a revamped version of the earlier Setu Yojana—targets the construction of missing bridges and approach roads:

Work has begun on 409 bridges worth ₹1,859 crore., Foundation stones were laid for 295 bridges valued at ₹1,792 crore.

Other rural connectivity projects totaling ₹327 crore were also launched. Dipak Kumar Singh, Additional Chief Secretary of RWD, presented detailed project insights during the event.

These initiatives aim to strengthen last-mile connectivity, improve rural access to essential services, and drive inclusive economic development across Bihar.
