Bhubaneswar's ₹200 Crore Urban Oasis: A Green Transformation

The Bhubaneswar Development Authority (BDA) is set to transform a three-kilometre stretch along Storm Water Channel 10—spanning from BDA City Centre (formerly Nicco Park) to the proposed Lake Zone near Janpath—into a vibrant recreational corridor at an estimated cost of ₹200 crore.

The project has received the green light from the Odisha government following a recent review by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi. BDA Vice-Chairman N Thirumala Naik stated that a detailed project report (DPR) is currently being prepared and will be submitted for government funding soon.

The redevelopment plan aims to revamp the natural drain corridor by integrating ecological restoration with contemporary urban design. In the first phase, BDA City Centre will be upgraded with features such as modern lighting, landscaped gardens, an Ayurvedic park, herbal gardens, pedestrian walkways, foot overbridges, fine-dining restaurants, and hotel spaces.

A key component of the initiative is the revival of the long-stalled Lake Neutral project near Satya Nagar, which will be incorporated into the new Lake Zone.

Additional features of the corridor will include a wastewater treatment plant, public recreational areas, roadside gardens, and extensive green cover. This ambitious initiative is designed to enhance Bhubaneswar’s liveability by offering residents a sustainable, eco-friendly public space that combines environmental conservation with urban rejuvenation.
