Chip-ping In: India Approves ₹3,936 Cr for New Semiconductor Hubs

The Union Cabinet has approved two new semiconductor manufacturing units with a combined investment of ₹3,936 crore, a move expected to generate employment for around 2,230 skilled professionals.

The projects—by Crystal Matrix Ltd and Suchi Semicon—have been cleared under the India Semiconductor Mission and will be set up in Gujarat. They include the country’s first commercial Mini/Micro-LED display facility based on Gallium Nitride (GaN) technology, along with a semiconductor packaging unit.

Announcing the decision, Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the approvals represent a major step toward strengthening India’s semiconductor ecosystem.

With these additions, the total number of approved projects under the mission has risen to 12, taking the overall investment commitment to about ₹1.64 lakh crore—exceeding the earlier target of ₹1.60 lakh crore.
