Thiruvananthapuram is set to launch the CITIIS 2.0 programme by mid-October, focusing on climate resilience and advancing a circular economy through integrated waste management.
The initiative—City Investments To Innovate, Integrate and Sustain (CITIIS)—aims to transform the capital’s approach to waste by achieving 100% scientific handling and a zero-garbage status. The city currently generates 352.58 tonnes of solid waste daily.
The Detailed Project Report (DPR), presently under final review by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development, outlines a plan to generate ₹31 lakh in monthly revenue by converting waste into valuable resources.
With a total allocation of ₹129.66 crore, the project is jointly funded by the state (₹103.7 crore) and the Centre (₹25.9 crore). Key components include organic waste converters, sensor-based aerobic bins, RDF plants, recycling units, shredders, compactors, suction and sweeping machines, IT-enabled waste collection systems, and institutional incinerators.
Implemented by the Smart City Thiruvananthapuram Ltd. (SCTL) and the city corporation, the project is slated for completion by 2027 and is expected to significantly upgrade the city’s waste management infrastructure.
