Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board is preparing a detailed feasibility report to implement district metered areas (DMAs) in newly added parts of Chennai, aiming to reduce non-revenue water losses, currently estimated at 20–30% of total supply.
As part of the initiative, the agency has begun studying infrastructure retrofitting in recently commissioned water supply schemes to convert them into DMAs, with Mugalivakkam identified as the pilot area. The approach involves isolating specific zones within the distribution network and using metered flow systems to monitor and manage water usage.
Pilot projects are also underway in areas such as Valasaravakkam, Neelankarai, and Semmenchery, where smart technologies including IoT sensors and flow meters are being deployed to detect leaks, monitor pressure, and improve distribution efficiency.
In Semmenchery, the system will cover around 1,100 household connections, enabling a more reliable and efficient water supply of nearly 7.93 million litres per day, while helping the city move toward better water management practices.
