Cruising Toward Growth: J&K Modernizes National Waterways

Atal Dulloo recently chaired a high-level review meeting on the development of inland water transport infrastructure across Jammu and Kashmir in collaboration with the Inland Waterways Authority of India.

The meeting evaluated a strategic plan aimed at developing sustainable and eco-friendly transportation systems along the Union Territory’s major river networks. Key areas of focus included strengthening cruise tourism, modernising urban water transport facilities, and improving navigational infrastructure on notified National Waterways.

During the review, Atal Dulloo addressed several inter-departmental challenges, including the removal of coffer dams beneath bridges, raising overhead power lines, and ensuring utility connectivity at proposed terminals. He also stressed the importance of close coordination between the Transport Department and other line agencies for sewage treatment at ghats and improved road connectivity to water transport hubs.

Highlighting the economic and environmental benefits of the initiative, the Chief Secretary directed departments to accelerate project execution. He noted that enhanced inland water transport infrastructure would provide a sustainable mobility alternative while supporting tourism growth, creating local employment opportunities, and revitalising riverfront economies.

As part of the project, construction of eight floating jetties along the Jhelum River corridor is currently underway and is expected to be completed by July 2026. Installation of navigational aids is scheduled in parallel, while related onshore infrastructure is targeted for completion by July 2027.
