The New Mangalore Port Authority (NMPA) marked its 50th anniversary in Mangaluru, with Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal inaugurating 16 key infrastructure projects and 113 CSR initiatives worth Rs 1,500 crore.
Notable launches included a 150-bed multi-specialty hospital developed under a PPP model, aimed at supporting port workers and the local community under Ayushman Bharat, and a new office building for the Mercantile Marine Department (MMD) to streamline seafarer certification.
Since its inception in 1975 with just four berths, NMPA now handles 46 million tonnes of cargo annually, with plans to expand to 100 million tonnes by 2047. As India’s largest coffee exporter and second-largest LPG importer, the port is fully solar-powered and emphasizes sustainability. The 2047 Master Plan envisions growth in LNG infrastructure, cruise terminals, and green logistics, reinforcing NMPA’s position as a premier maritime hub.
