Karnataka's Blockbuster Dream: 160-Acre Film City Set for Mysuru

The Karnataka government has announced plans to establish a state-of-the-art Film City on 160 acres in Himmavu village, near Mysuru, with development to be carried out under a public-private partnership (PPP) model. An Expression of Interest (EoI) will be floated once the land earmarked for the project is secured through fencing.

Renowned filmmaker Rajendra Singh Babu has advocated for designating Mysuru as the "cinema capital of India," highlighting its existing film-friendly ecosystem—including over 250 scenic locations, 16 palaces, rivers, reservoirs, and wildlife sanctuaries within a 15 km radius. Officials noted that the city’s excellent road, rail, and air connectivity, coupled with low traffic congestion, further enhances its appeal as a prime destination for film production and tourism.

The Film City will be developed in phases and will include key production infrastructure such as a railway track, runway, palace set, golf course, ponds, and lakes, among other cinematic amenities. A detailed master plan is currently in the works.

Nearby locations such as Srirangapatna, Melukote, KRS Dam, Mysuru Zoo, Chamundi Hills, and the Kapila and Cauvery riverbanks are expected to serve as ideal backdrops for various genres of film shoots, reinforcing Mysuru’s potential to emerge as a leading cinematic and cultural hub in India.
