Kerala’s New Horizon: A ₹16k Cr Maritime Milestone

Work on the second phase of the Vizhinjam International Seaport project commenced on January 25, 2026, marking a major boost to Kerala’s infrastructure development.

The project is now targeted for completion well ahead of its earlier timeline of 2045. Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone (APSEZ) has committed an investment of ₹16,000 crore for the second phase. Inaugurating the project, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan described Vizhinjam as “a dream of decades” and said the port would firmly counter the perception that development does not take place in Kerala.

The second phase will significantly expand port infrastructure, including extensions to the breakwater and container berths, enabling the simultaneous docking of five motherships. The breakwater will be extended from 2.96 km to 3.88 km, while the container berth length will increase from 800 metres to 2,000 metres. The port has already emerged as an important financial asset for the state.

Addressing the event, Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal said Kerala holds a key position in India’s maritime transformation. He highlighted the state’s strategic location along major shipping routes, skilled workforce, scale, and strong institutional capacity as factors that position it as a leading maritime and logistics hub on the western coast.
