Knowledge Takeoff: Global University Hub Lands Near NMIA

City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) has identified a 100-hectare site in Karanjade, Panvel, near the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) for its flagship International Educity project—an ambitious plan to develop India’s first integrated education hub hosting campuses of leading global universities.

The proposed Educity will bring together international universities, research centres, innovation hubs, student housing, and supporting infrastructure within a single planned township. The project is envisioned as a world-class knowledge ecosystem that promotes learning, research, and industry collaboration, positioning Navi Mumbai as a global education destination.

Educity forms a key part of CIDCO’s broader airport influence area strategy, which includes complementary developments such as Medicity and Aerocity. These specialised zones are planned around NMIA to create a diversified and future-ready urban growth corridor.

By attracting top global academic institutions and fostering innovation-driven development, the initiative is expected to significantly enhance Maharashtra’s education infrastructure while boosting regional economic growth. It also aligns with long-term plans to transform Navi Mumbai into a globally connected hub for education, research, and knowledge-based industries.

According to Vijay Singhal, the project aims to host centres of some of the world’s top universities. He highlighted the site’s strategic advantage, noting its proximity—within 3–4 kilometres—to the airport, along with strong connectivity to NH-348 and the multimodal corridor.
