Meghalaya’s Rs 732-Cr Stadium Passes Assembly Panel Inspection

A committee of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly conducted an inspection of major infrastructure and sports development projects across East Khasi Hills and Ri-Bhoi districts on 26 May 2026 to review construction progress and implementation status.

The inspection covered several ongoing projects, including the under-construction Mawkhanu Football Stadium, an indoor stadium and tennis court at Umsawli, and water sports infrastructure at Umtham. The review was led by Committee on Government Assurances Chairman Renikton Lyngdoh Tongkhar, along with MLAs M Ampareen Lyngdoh, Celestine Lyngdoh, and Ollan Singh Suin, in the presence of officials from the Sports Department and the executing agency.

Among the projects reviewed, the Rs 732-crore Mawkhanu Football Stadium in New Shillong is a flagship initiative being developed by KPC Projects. The stadium will have a seating capacity of 40,000 and is targeted for completion by 2028 under the current tender agreement. The project forms part of Meghalaya’s broader vision to strengthen its position as a major football destination in India.

The committee also assessed the Rs 21-crore water sports centre at Umtham in Ri-Bhoi district, which includes a dedicated canoe slalom course spread over 14 acres to promote adventure sports and tourism activities.

Officials expressed satisfaction with the pace of construction and reiterated confidence in the timely completion of the projects, which are expected to significantly improve sports infrastructure and support tourism development in the state.
