Mumbai's Next Big Hub: The Worli Jetty Transformation

The Maharashtra Government has initiated steps to accelerate the development of the Worli jetty in Mumbai, with the project aimed at enhancing water transport, emergency medical services and tourism, Fisheries and Ports Minister Nitesh Rane said on Monday.

He stated that the process of appointing a Project Management Consultant (PMC) — tasked with preparing technical approvals, environmental clearances and detailed project reports — is nearing completion. Expressions of interest have also been invited for the development of a helipad at the site under a public-private partnership (PPP) model.

A review meeting on the project was held at Mantralaya and attended by Ashwini Bhide, Maharashtra Maritime Board Chief Executive Officer Pradeep P and senior officials from various departments.

According to Rane, temporary jetties had previously been constructed near Amarsons Garden Interchange and the Worli Dairy area during the Mumbai Coastal Road project to facilitate the transport of construction materials. With the coastal road project nearing completion, the government is now assessing their potential use for water transport services such as water taxis, ambulances and passenger ferry operations.

He added that a structural audit carried out by Indian Institute of Technology Bombay through the Maharashtra Maritime Board concluded that the Amarsons jetty is not suitable for passenger operations, while the Worli Dairy jetty can be upgraded for safe public use with the required modifications.

The minister said the government remains committed to modernising Mumbai’s maritime transport infrastructure, adding that the Worli jetty redevelopment project is expected to strengthen emergency response services, improve coastal connectivity and promote tourism in the city.
