₹1143 Crore Boost: India Enters the GaN Chip Manufacturing Race

On April 11, 2025, the foundation stone was laid for India’s first gallium nitride (GaN)-based chip manufacturing plant in Nava Raipur, Chhattisgarh. The facility, being developed by Polymatech Electronics, marks a major milestone in the country’s journey toward semiconductor self-sufficiency. The ceremony was officiated by Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai.

Polymatech Electronics’ Managing Director and CEO, Eshwara Rao Nandam, announced an additional investment of ₹10,000 crore in Chhattisgarh, highlighting the company’s long-term vision for strengthening India’s chip manufacturing capabilities. The initial phase of the plant, backed by an investment of ₹1,143 crore, is set to produce 10 billion chips annually by 2030. These advanced chips will be built using cutting-edge five-nanometer and three-nanometer technologies, bringing India into the league of top global semiconductor producers.

The facility will also house a telecom device packaging unit, supporting domestic manufacturing of critical components for telecom infrastructure, IoT applications, and satellite communications. “Chips from this plant will power everything from everyday electronics to next-gen 5G and 6G networks, high-performance computing, defense systems, data analytics, and power electronics,” said Nandam.

This initiative is in line with India’s strategic push to reduce dependency on semiconductor imports and establish itself as a global tech hub. GaN technology, known for its superior power efficiency and miniaturization capabilities, represents a transformative step forward for multiple high-impact industries.
