Sonowal's Waterway Trio: New Era for Mizoram Connectivity

Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal has announced three inland waterway projects in Mizoram aimed at boosting trade, tourism and regional connectivity in the state.

The initiatives will focus on the Tlawng and Chhimtuipui rivers and include navigability assessments, hydrographic and techno-economic feasibility studies, as well as the development of modern terminals and jetties. These projects are expected to provide faster and more cost-effective transportation options, supporting economic growth in the remote North-eastern region. The government has allocated Rs 89 lakh for feasibility and hydrographic studies on the Tlawng river and Rs 1.42 crore for hydrographic surveys on the Chhimtuipui river. In addition, Stage-I construction of terminals and jetties is underway in southern Mizoram’s Lunglei district at an estimated cost of Rs 9.82 crore.

Highlighting the broader strategic importance of inland waterways, Sonowal also underscored the Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport Project, which is designed to strengthen connectivity between northeast India and Myanmar.
