Tamil Nadu's Ports: ₹1.2 Lakh Cr Modernization Takes Flight

Tamil Nadu is undertaking a major modernization of its key ports—Chennai Port, Kamarajar Port (Ennore), and VO Chidambaranar Port (Tuticorin)—with an investment outlay of ₹1.2 lakh crore. The initiative aims to boost port capacity, streamline cargo handling, and strengthen last-mile connectivity.

The upgrades will tackle persistent challenges related to capacity limits, vessel movement, and transport logistics. Planned enhancements include deeper drafts, additional berths, expanded storage yards, and improved rail and road links. Chennai Port, a vital centre for automobile exports, will receive the largest share of funding at ₹42,000 crore.

This development is set to benefit Tamil Nadu’s diverse industrial ecosystem, spanning automobiles, textiles, electronics, and aerospace. Hyundai Motor India, which has depended on Chennai Port for global exports since 1999, is among the major industries expected to gain from the expansion. “The upgrades are crucial for boosting exports and enhancing industrial competitiveness,” a port official said.
