NMCG's New Wave: Digital Twins, STPs, and River Rejuvenation

The National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) has approved a series of major research and infrastructure initiatives aimed at strengthening river management and pollution control across the Ganga basin.

During its 67th Executive Committee meeting, chaired by Rajeev Kumar Mital, the focus was on data-driven planning, climate resilience, and river rejuvenation. Key approvals include research on glacier retreat, development of a digital twin of the Ganga, and deployment of advanced monitoring technologies such as SONAR and AI. A ₹361.86 crore project to clean the Mahananda River in West Bengal was also sanctioned, featuring new sewage treatment plants and a modern drain management system.

The committee further cleared pollution abatement measures for the Yamuna River in Delhi under a hybrid annuity-based PPP model. The plan includes 25 interception structures, two STPs of 27 MLD and 22 MLD, new pumping stations, rising mains, RCC channels, and truss bridges for drain crossings. These upgrades will help divert untreated flows from the Jahangirpuri drain and ensure that only treated effluent is safely discharged into the Yamuna.
