Tokyo Electron Expands to India to Support Tata's Chip Ambitions

Tokyo Electron, a leading Japanese semiconductor equipment manufacturer, will establish offices in Dholera, Gujarat, and Assam to support Tata Electronics’ upcoming semiconductor fabrication and assembly-test facilities.

Takeshi Okubo, Executive Vice-President and General Manager, stated, “The schedule to set up our office in Dholera is aligned with Tata’s Dholera fab. We also expect more developed infrastructure to help accelerate our support systems.” The Dholera office will house 200–300 engineers, along with training centres and a warehouse for critical components. In contrast, the Assam location will host a smaller team, suited to the scale of operations planned there.

Before considering semiconductor equipment manufacturing in India, Tokyo Electron will prioritize research and development in advanced domains such as artificial intelligence, robotics, and software. “We want to establish a base in India for software related to robotics, AI, and similar applications,” Okubo added.

The announcement follows a recent visit by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Japanese politician Shigeru Ishiba to Tokyo Electron’s factory, underscoring the growing India–Japan partnership in semiconductor technology.
