APM Terminals and Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) have formalized their collaboration through a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to facilitate the development of a cutting-edge container terminal within the expansive Vadhavan mega port project in Maharashtra. The endeavor is being orchestrated through a dedicated special purpose vehicle (SPV) jointly managed by JNPA and the Maharashtra Maritime Board, entrusted with the primary infrastructure development.
With an estimated investment of USD 10 billion (Rs 76,220 crore), the Vadhavan Port is poised to emerge as a colossal maritime facility, boasting an annual cargo-handling capacity of 23 million TEUs or 254 million tonnes. Designed to accommodate larger container vessels, including those with a capacity of 20,000 TEUs, the completed project is anticipated to secure a spot among the top 10 largest ports globally.
Strategically situated on the west coast approximately 150 km north of Mumbai, Vadhavan Port boasts a natural draft of around 20 meters, facilitating seamless connectivity to the National Highway Road network and the dedicated freight corridor (DFC) rail network. Beyond its role as a pivotal maritime hub, Vadhavan Port aspires to contribute significantly to the local economy and position itself as a hub for green fuel initiatives.
APM Terminals, already managing vital infrastructures in Pipavav and Nhava Sheva in India, brings its wealth of experience in constructing and operating premier ports worldwide to the Vadhavan project. The collaboration aims to leverage the strategic location of Vadhavan and APM Terminals' expertise to catalyze the growth of the regional ecosystem, benefiting local manufacturers, exporters, importers, and the broader economy.
