The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is seeking approval from the Maharashtra state government to allocate approximately 18 acres of land in Deonar to Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL) for the development of a compressed biogas (CBG) plant.
The proposed facility will process 1,000 tonnes per day (TPD) of wet municipal waste generated across Mumbai, converting organic waste into clean, renewable fuel. The project is planned in two phases: Phase I will establish a 500 TPD unit on 8 acres currently used as a BMC garage near the Deonar dumping ground, while Phase II will add another 500 TPD unit on 10 acres within the dumping ground itself.
An MoU for the initiative was signed between BMC and MGL in June 2023. The civic body has requested that the land be transferred at concessional rates to support the project. The Union government has prioritized CBG production from municipal waste, and this project aligns with that national goal.
All capital investment and operational expenses will be covered by MGL. BMC will provide wet waste at no cost, while the plant operator will retain rights to the biogas, fertilizers, and other by-products. Future expansion of the facility will include biomass treatment, organic fertilizer production, and green fuel generation—supporting a more sustainable and circular waste management system in Mumbai.
