Jharkhand's Rs 456 Crore Irrigation Dream

On February 10, 2024, Chief Minister Champai Soren of Jharkhand inaugurated the commencement of a significant irrigation project valued at Rs 456.62 crore. This endeavor is poised to positively impact the lives of inhabitants across 96 villages spanning Chainpur, Medininagar, Satbarwa, Vishrampur, Chhatarpur, Hussainabad, Hydernagar, and Mohammadganj blocks.

The Palamu Pipeline Irrigation project aims to harness water resources from three rivers, channeling them through subterranean pipelines to replenish various reservoirs. This initiative stands as a robust solution to address both irrigation and potable water needs within the region.

Acknowledging the arid nature of the Palamu region, the Chief Minister emphasized the vital role this project plays in meeting the district's water requirements. Additionally, he provided assurance regarding the imminent completion of the North-Koel Reservoir project. This larger-scale initiative is slated to facilitate irrigation across 1.11 lakh hectares, encompassing 91,000 hectares in Bihar as well.

Originating in 1972, the Palamu Pipeline Irrigation project faced interruption in 1993 due to forest department regulations in then undivided Bihar. However, with the central government's authorization in August 2017, the project has resumed, aiming to fulfill its long-due promise of enhancing agricultural prospects and community livelihoods.
