The Delhi government has set a December 2027 deadline to complete the installation of water and sewer lines in all unauthorised colonies across the city. Currently, sewer lines have been laid in 1,224 colonies, with work underway in an additional 159 locations.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta chaired a high-level review meeting at the Delhi Secretariat with officials from the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) and Urban Development Minister Pravesh Verma to assess the progress of water and sewerage infrastructure, Yamuna River rejuvenation, and overall budget planning. Emphasizing the significance of restoring the Yamuna, the Chief Minister described it as both an ethical responsibility and an environmental imperative.
To achieve this, the government is adopting a multi-pronged approach involving drain treatment, expansion of the sewerage network, and the construction of modern sewage treatment plants (STPs). Central to this initiative is a comprehensive 45-point action plan focused on eliminating pollution in the Yamuna and transforming it into a clean, vibrant, and accessible river.
The Chief Minister also underscored the importance of modernizing outdated infrastructure through phased upgrades using advanced technology. She reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring universal access to clean drinking water and effective sanitation systems, calling them essential to building a developed and sustainable Delhi.
