Kerala Govt. Grants Approval for BPCL to set up CBG plant in Kochi

Kerala Government Greenlights BPCL's Compressed Biogas Plant in Kochi to Address Organic Waste Issues.

The Government of Kerala has authorized the establishment of a compressed biogas (CBG) plant project by Bharat Petroleum Corporation (BPCL) on 22 November 2023. This initiative aims to provide a sustainable solution to the organic waste challenges prevailing in Kochi.

BPCL is set to undertake the construction of this new plant, with an estimated project cost of approximately Rs 150 crore. The anticipated timeline for completion is 15 months. The biogas treatment facility is poised to be a pivotal resolution for the city's organic waste predicament.

The Kochi Corporation has agreed to allocate 10 acres of land in Brahmapuram to BPCL for this purpose. On this land, a treatment plant capable of processing 150 metric tonnes of waste per day will be established. The generated CBG will be utilized by the central public sector undertaking (PSU). Additionally, organic fertilizers produced at the plant will be provided to farmers, and treated wastewater will be released, ensuring clean water discharge.

Clean Kerala Company (CKCL) is set to handle and dispose of residual inorganic waste post-processing. This significant decision comes months after a substantial fire incident at the Brahmapuram dump site, underscoring the urgency to revamp outdated waste management practices in the port city.
