NTPC Ltd has officially transferred ownership of its two captive coal mining projects — Chatti Bariatu and Badam, both located in Jharkhand — to its wholly-owned subsidiary, NTPC Mining Ltd (NML), effective 1 October 2025.
The transfer was formalised through an amended Business Transfer Agreement signed on 17 September, following NTPC’s earlier announcement in August 2025 to hive off its coal mining business as part of a strategic restructuring to streamline operations.
Project Details:
Chatti Bariatu Mine, Operational since April 2024, Production capacity: 7 million tonnes per annum (MTPA),
Area: 646 hectares, Functions as a captive fuel source for NTPC’s thermal power plants, Badam Coal Block, Estimated reserves: Over 90 million tonnes, Planned capacity: 2.5–3 MTPA, Current status: Delayed due to land acquisition challenges
The creation of NTPC Mining Ltd marks a significant step in consolidating NTPC’s coal mining operations under a dedicated entity, with the aim to enhance efficiency, expedite development, and ensure effective management of its allotted coal blocks.
