GSI Digs Deep: 1,055 Programs Uncover India's Mineral Treasures

The Geological Survey of India (GSI) has unveiled its comprehensive Field Season for 2024-25, encompassing a diverse array of 1,055 scientific programs. Among these initiatives, 392 mineral development projects spanning G2, G3, G4, and offshore explorations have been identified, demonstrating substantial potential for future actionable mineral blocks.

Furthermore, the Union Mines Ministry highlights an additional 133 projects with a mineral bias or mineral discovery focus, particularly in the G4 stage. These projects hold promise for identifying areas conducive to future exploration. Notably, a significant emphasis has been placed on exploring strategic and critical fertilizer minerals within the overall exploration framework.

In a noteworthy development, 188 projects concentrating on strategically important mineral commodities such as rare earth elements (REE), graphite, lithium, vanadium, and the platinum group of elements (PGE) have received approval for FY25. This marks a remarkable 50 percent increase compared to the previous year's target.

Additionally, 111 projects centered on natural hazard studies or public good geoscience with societal benefits are underway. Twenty-five of these programs have been initiated in response to state requests, predominantly focusing on natural hazards. Furthermore, collaborative efforts involving 43 programs with universities, agencies, and sponsorships from entities like IITs, NGRI, DRDO, NRSC-ISRO, University of Hyderabad, ASI, CGWB Ministry of Jal Shakti, SJVNL, NWDA, Indian Railways, BRO, and state irrigation departments are in progress.

Acknowledging the critical importance of mineral exploration, GSI and other exploration agencies have received directives to explore avenues for accelerating the pace of exploration of critical minerals. This strategic initiative aims to enhance resource discovery and contribute to the sustainable development of mineral wealth.
