On January 22, 2024, Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled the 'Pradhan Mantri Suryodaya Yojana,' a progressive government initiative designed to provide rooftop solar power systems to one crore households.
Initially, in 2014, the government initiated the 'Rooftop Solar Programme' with the goal of achieving a cumulative installed capacity of 40,000 MW (40 GW) by 2022. However, due to unforeseen challenges, the government extended the deadline to 2026. The launch of the Pradhan Mantri Suryodaya Yojana signifies a renewed effort to attain the targeted 40 GW rooftop solar capacity.
This new scheme aims to deliver solar-powered electricity to households through the installation of solar rooftops.
As of December 2023, data from the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) indicates that the overall solar power installed capacity in India has reached approximately 73.31 GW. Concurrently, the installed capacity for rooftop solar stands at nearly 11.08 GW, marking progress in the nation's pursuit of sustainable energy solutions.
