Powering Up Coal: Adani, NTPC Lead ₹37,500-Crore Gasification Race

The Centre’s Rs 37,500-crore coal gasification incentive scheme attracted seven proposals from five companies—including Adani Enterprises and NTPC—in its inaugural round. Additional applicants feature Talcher Fertilisers with a urea plant proposal and Shyam Sel & Power targeting a syngas project. The initiative supports India's goal to achieve 75 million tonnes (MT) of gasification capacity by 2030 (part of a broader 100 MT target), aiming to catalyze Rs 2.5-3 lakh crore in investments. By converting domestic coal and lignite into syngas, methanol, ammonia, urea, and hydrogen, the program seeks to curb imports of LNG and industrial feedstocks.
