At Davos 2026, Jharkhand outlined a renewed economic vision centred on mining, with a strong emphasis on moving beyond raw mineral extraction toward local processing and value addition. The state showcased its plans to leverage mineral wealth as a catalyst for sustainable and inclusive growth.
As part of this strategy, Jharkhand announced the development of an integrated mineral processing policy aimed at strengthening its economic trajectory. Arava Rajkamal, Secretary of the Department of Mines & Geology, said a draft policy is under preparation and will provide targeted incentives and regulatory clarity to encourage the establishment of mineral processing and refining capacities within the state. Despite hosting 22 of India’s 24 critical minerals, Jharkhand has historically exported raw materials. The proposed policy seeks to reverse this trend by promoting local beneficiation, generating employment and enhancing the state’s economic output.
Finance Secretary Prashant Kumar underscored the urgency of accelerating mineral processing in the interest of national economic security, particularly in the context of evolving geopolitical challenges. The initiative aims to transform Jharkhand’s mineral resources into a long-term growth engine by maximising value addition within the state rather than exporting unprocessed minerals.
