Reliance Invests Rs. 20,000 Crore to Transform West Bengal's Energy Landscape

Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) is forging ahead with its sustainability initiatives through the launch of a Compressed Biogas (CBG) project in Kolkata, West Bengal. This endeavor aligns with RIL's ambitious investment plan of Rs. 20,000 crore in West Bengal over three years, emphasizing their commitment to sustainable energy solutions. The project's primary focus is to establish 100 CBG plants in the state, capable of processing 5.5 million tonnes of agro-residue and organic waste annually. This initiative not only tackles carbon emissions by producing 2 million tonnes of carbon mitigation but also generates 2.5 million tonnes of organic manure.

RIL plans to utilize its indigenous technology to spearhead CBG production, facilitating knowledge sharing and technology transfer within India's bio-energy sector. This initiative not only promotes environmental sustainability but also offers economic benefits, creating job opportunities in construction, operation, and maintenance. However, challenges such as securing land, obtaining permits, ensuring a consistent feedstock supply, establishing a robust distribution network, and fostering market demand for CBG among consumers and industries remain hurdles that need to be addressed.

With a track record of being India's largest bio-energy producer and collaborations with local communities and farmers to promote CBG adoption and sustainable agricultural practices, RIL's new venture in Kolkata underscores its commitment to reducing dependence on fossil fuels while prioritizing environmental conservation and community engagement.

As on December 2023, The project is now in the stage of construction being started. The completion of the project's work has reached the 20% mark. The work on the project will be finished by December, 2026.
