UCG Game Changer: 14th Coal Mine Auction Now Open

The Ministry of Coal has launched the 14th round of commercial coal mine auctions in New Delhi, offering 41 mines for development starting December 29, 2025.

This auction marks a significant milestone with the introduction of underground coal gasification (UCG) for the first time, identifying 21 mines with UCG potential. The initiative aims to enhance energy security and promote sustainable coal utilisation.

Of the 41 mines on offer, 20 are fully explored and 21 partially explored, providing a balanced mix of opportunities for investors. The round includes five mines under the Coal Mines (Special Provisions) Act, 2015 (CMSP) and 36 under the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act, 1957 (MMDR).

Union Minister of Coal G. Kishan Reddy highlighted the sector’s transformation under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, stressing the government’s commitment to reducing coal imports and boosting domestic production. He urged industry stakeholders to actively participate in advancing India’s journey toward energy self-reliance.
