NTPC Ltd has invited bids for the procurement of electricity from thermal power plants with capacities ranging from 150 MW to 250 MW, aiming to enhance grid-balancing capabilities as renewable energy capacity continues to expand across India.
The initiative reflects the evolving needs of the power sector, where the increasing share of solar and wind generation is creating a greater requirement for flexible and reliable power sources capable of responding to fluctuations in electricity supply and demand.
In its bid document, NTPC noted that while the rapid growth of renewable energy is advancing India’s clean energy transition, it also presents operational challenges for grid management. The company emphasized the importance of maintaining adequate dispatchable generation resources to ensure stability and reliability across the power network.
As the country’s largest power producer, NTPC highlighted that thermal power plants remain a critical component of the electricity system, particularly in light of the limited availability of hydropower, gas-based generation, and large-scale energy storage infrastructure. These plants provide essential flexibility and balancing support, helping to maintain uninterrupted power supply during periods of variability in renewable energy output.
The move underscores the continued role of thermal generation in supporting India’s energy transition, serving as a bridge to ensure grid security and operational resilience while renewable energy capacity scales up across the country.
