Coal India's ₹25,000 Crore Green Leap

Coal India Ltd (CIL) is set to enter the renewable energy sector with plans to develop 4.5 GW of green energy capacity, backed by an estimated investment of ₹25,000 crore. The initiative will be rolled out in phases to supply clean electricity to green ammonia production facilities developed by AM Green, a venture supported by the promoters of Hyderabad-based Greenko Group.

AM Green aims to produce 5 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) of green ammonia by 2030, with proposed sites in Kandla (Gujarat) or other strategic locations. To support this, it will source renewable energy from CIL's upcoming solar and wind power projects. A non-binding memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed between CIL and AM Green Ammonia (India) on May 7, 2025, in Kolkata, marking one of the world’s largest renewable energy deals.

CIL's planned portfolio includes 2,500–3,000 MW of solar power and 1,500–2,000 MW of wind power. Solar projects will be located in high-sunlight states such as Gujarat and Rajasthan, while wind projects will be sited in the southern regions. The energy output will be integrated with pumped hydro storage developed by AM Green to ensure a stable and continuous power supply—forming a hybrid model designed to meet the constant energy needs of green ammonia production.
