Gigawatts of Growth: Inside the ₹10 Lakh Crore Power Push

Over the past decade, the government has approved 237 power projects worth over ₹10 lakh crore under the Pragati scheme, designed to fast-track the implementation of critical infrastructure projects.

Launched in March 2015 under the direct supervision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the initiative identified 53 delayed projects valued at ₹4.1 lakh crore for focused monitoring. Of these, 43 projects worth ₹3 lakh crore—including major thermal, hydro, and transmission projects—have been successfully commissioned. Notable projects reviewed under Pragati include the Gadarwara Super Thermal Power Project and the Tehri Pumped Storage Project. Meanwhile, 108 projects worth ₹6 lakh crore are currently underway, with the platform continuing to enhance execution timelines.

The Pragati initiative has significantly reduced inter-departmental delays, improving the delivery of power projects. “Pragati has become a model of proactive governance, bridging the gap between policy formulation and field-level execution,” an official said.
