TN’s Green Leap: 270 MW of Firm Renewable Energy Approved

The Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Commission (TNERC) has approved the procurement of 270 MW of firm and dispatchable renewable energy by Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation (TNPDCL) from the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI).

The procurement, cleared for a 25-year period, will be at discovered tariffs of ₹5.06 per kWh for 120 MW and ₹5.07 per kWh for 150 MW, along with an additional trading margin of ₹0.07 per kWh payable to SECI. The approval follows SECI’s October 2024 tender to procure 1,200 MW of round-the-clock renewable power. The projects are expected to be commissioned within 24 months of signing the power purchase agreement.

TNPDCL justified the purchase citing projected growth in peak electricity demand, the need for greater renewable energy integration into the grid, compliance with resource adequacy requirements, fulfilment of renewable purchase obligations (RPOs), and reduced dependence on thermal generation.

The move is expected to bolster Tamil Nadu’s renewable energy portfolio while ensuring reliable, round-the-clock power supply for consumers across the state.
