A First for Tamil Nadu: Thermal Plant Gets 200 MW Battery Boost

The Tamil Nadu Power Generation Corporation Limited (TNPGCL) is preparing to pilot a 200 MW Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) at the North Chennai Thermal Power Station—marking a first-of-its-kind integration of storage technology with a thermal power plant in the state.

While BESS is typically associated with renewable sources like solar and wind, this initiative aims to store surplus electricity generated during low-demand periods at a thermal facility. Tamil Nadu’s peak power demand has already reached 20,830 MW, and although immediate gains may be limited, officials highlight that large-scale deployment could improve grid stability, reduce power outages, and lower dependence on costly power purchases from private suppliers.

The system also promises to reduce operational inefficiencies. Frequent shutdowns and restarts of thermal units—each taking 10–12 hours—could be minimized, helping to avoid financial losses and improve responsiveness to demand fluctuations.

The project awaits approval from the Tamil Nadu government and the Green Energy Corporation and will be implemented under the Viability Gap Funding (VGF) scheme. A power purchase agreement (PPA) with the state distribution company will be required for execution.
