Chhattisgarh's Gigawatt Leap: SJVN Powers Up Kotpali with 1800MW PSP

SJVN has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Government of Chhattisgarh and Chhattisgarh State Power Generation Company (CSPGCL) to develop an 1,800 MW pumped storage project (PSP) at Kotpali in Chhattisgarh.

The agreement, signed by Sushil Kumar Sharma, Director (Projects), SJVN; Subodh Kumar Singh, Principal Secretary, Energy Department of Chhattisgarh; and Sanjeev Kumar Katiyar, Managing Director, CSPGCL, aims to enhance India's energy security and promote sustainable power development.

The MoU signing was witnessed by Chhattisgarh's Chief Minister Vishnu Dev Sai, Commerce & Industry Minister Lakhan Lal Dewangan, and senior officials from both parties. With an estimated investment of ₹9,500 crore, the project is expected to generate approximately 3,967 million units (MU) of electricity and create employment for around 5,000 people during its development phase.

Located in Balrampur District, the Kotpali PSP will function as an off-stream closed-loop system, storing surplus renewable energy during low-demand periods and releasing it during peak hours. This initiative will facilitate greater renewable energy integration while supporting regional economic growth.
