A 1 MW green hydrogen demonstration plant is under construction at Kandla Port, Gujarat, and is expected to commence operations by July 2025, according to Sushil Kumar Singh, Chairman of Deendayal Port Authority (DPA).
Developed at a cost of ₹13 crore, the project will primarily support hydrogen-powered buses operated by DPA in Gandhidham, approximately 15 km from Kandla Port. Larsen & Toubro (L&T) is spearheading the plant's development, with electrolyser testing already completed at L&T’s Hazira facility, paving the way for installations at Kandla.
The initiative is focused on two key objectives:
- Green Mobility: Supplying hydrogen to 11 fuel-cell buses under a collaborative project with NTPC.
- Port Electrification: Utilizing fuel cells to generate electricity for port and jetty operations
This demonstration plant is part of a broader green hydrogen strategy at Kandla Port. DPA has allocated 3,400 acres to four major companies—Reliance Green Hydrogen, L&T Green Energy Tech, Welspun New Energy, and AM Green Hydrogen—to establish facilities with a combined annual production capacity of 5.5 million tonnes of green hydrogen.
Beyond domestic applications, green hydrogen and its derivatives, such as methanol and green ammonia, will be exported and used as alternative fuels for maritime vessels. Kandla, alongside Tuticorin and Paradip, has been designated as a key hydrogen hub in India’s port infrastructure strategy.
