NHPC Advances Parbati-II with Unit 2 Trial Completion

NHPC successfully completed the trial run of Unit 2 (200 MW) of the Parbati-II Hydroelectric Project in Himachal Pradesh on 24 March 2025.

The 800 MW project (comprising four units of 200 MW each) has faced prolonged delays since its inception in 2003 due to tunneling challenges, water and silt seepage, flash floods, and adverse geological conditions. Originally scheduled for commissioning in 2010, NHPC now aims to complete trial runs for the remaining units by 31 March 2025. The successful trial of Unit 2 marks a crucial milestone toward full operational capacity.

Once fully commissioned, Parbati-II is expected to generate approximately 3,074 million units (MU) of electricity annually, bolstering India's renewable energy sector. Additionally, its operation is anticipated to help mitigate flood risks along the Parbati River, benefiting regions from Barshaini in the Manikaran Valley to Bhuntar.
