NHPC Limited is in the process of planning the Teesta Hydel Power Project Stage IV in Dzongu, North Sikkim, with an estimated cost of Rs. 5,190.21 crore. This run-of-the-river hydroelectric power project aims to generate 600 MW of clean energy via a 58 m high concrete gravity dam and a comprehensive tunnel and pipeline system. While the project awaits environmental clearance and land acquisition, it is expected to significantly contribute to India's clean energy goals, create employment opportunities, and fortify regional power supply, albeit facing concerns about its environmental and social impact.
Once approved, this initiative will bolster Sikkim's power grid, elevate socio-economic development, and contribute to flood control measures in the Teesta River basin. However, challenges involving environmental concerns, land acquisition in the protected biosphere reserve of Dzongu, and the thoughtful resettlement of affected communities remain at the forefront. Engaging with stakeholders and addressing these concerns, NHPC aims to commence the project upon receiving environmental clearance, potentially taking around 8 years for completion. Additionally, NHPC's successful completion of Stages I, II, and III of the Teesta Hydel Power Project and the Sikkim government's support underpin the significance of this upcoming venture for the state's development.
As on January, 2024. Project has gotten approvals. All approvals were granted. By March 2024, project construction will begin.
