ReNew has proposed a substantial investment of Rs 26,400 crore in a green hydrogen project located in Kerala. The project aims to achieve a production capacity of 220 kilo-tonnes per annum (ktpa) of green hydrogen.
To facilitate further value addition, the green hydrogen capacity will be utilized for the production of 1,100 ktpa of green ammonia. This ambitious endeavor will rely on a two GW capacity electrolyser, drawing power annually from five GW to six GW renewable energy plants, totaling 14,000 million units. The proposed location for this venture is Vizhinjam, strategically positioned near its port to facilitate the export of the green hydrogen produced.
The project is slated to be executed in three distinct phases. Phase-I will focus on establishing a green hydrogen derivative capacity of 100 ktpa, followed by Phase-II and Phase-III, each targeting a capacity of 500 ktpa. The anticipated timeline for each phase is expected to span 36 to 42 months.
Given the scale and complexity of the project, it is projected to require nearly 50 million liters per day (MLD) of water. The implementation of the project is estimated to generate employment opportunities for 4,000 to 5,000 skilled and unskilled staff, with an additional 18,000 personnel during the construction phases.
In a noteworthy development, the company had previously inked a framework agreement with Egypt in November 2022, outlining plans for a green hydrogen plant in the Suez Canal Economic Zone. The envisioned investment for this international venture is USD eight billion.
