Storage First: Parliament Demands Speed on NHPC's 20,000 MW PSPs

The Parliamentary Committee on Public Undertakings (CoPU) has emphasized the urgent need for state-run NHPC to accelerate its 20,000 MW pumped storage project (PSP) initiatives. Highlighted in a parliamentary report presented on August 6, 2026, the directive stresses the critical role of energy storage in stabilizing India's power grid amid rapid renewable energy expansion.

The report also addressed operational setbacks at the 510 MW Teesta-V Power Station, which faced extensive generation losses exceeding 3,770 million units due to a Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF). CoPU mandated that NHPC strictly follow the June 15, 2026 deadline to restore the facility, backed by rigorous monthly progress updates to the Ministry of Power.
