French mobility major Alstom has secured a substantial contract from Larsen & Toubro (L&T) to supply 39 fully driverless Metropolis trainsets, advanced Urbalis Forward CBTC signalling systems, and five years of FlexCare Perform maintenance services for Mumbai Metro Line 4.
The contract, valued at several hundred million euros, includes the delivery of 234 metro cars. Spanning 35.3 km, the elevated Green Line will connect Wadala to Kasarvadavali in Thane through 32 stations, aiming to decongest the Eastern Express Highway, significantly reduce travel time, and lower carbon emissions.
Aligned with the Government of India’s ‘Make in India’ initiative, all trainsets will be designed and manufactured locally. Engineering and project management will be handled from Alstom’s Bengaluru facility, train assembly will take place in Sri City, propulsion systems will be produced in Coimbatore, and bogie manufacturing will be done in Savli, Gujarat.
The driverless trains will feature modern amenities including air circulation and cooling systems, electric braking, wheelchair accessibility, bicycle racks, and robust cybersecurity features. Alstom’s Urbalis Vision CBTC platform will be deployed at the Mandale depot’s Operations Control Centre, with a backup control centre located in Mogharpada.
This project builds on Alstom’s growing footprint in Mumbai’s urban mobility landscape, where the company is already supporting multiple metro lines. Globally, Alstom has delivered CBTC signalling solutions for more than 190 metro lines.
