Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) will extend its metro corridor from Koyambedu to Pattabiram via Ambattur and Avadi, aiming to significantly enhance connectivity to the western suburbs by 2030.
The 22-km corridor will be integrated with the long-pending expansion of the Chennai–Tiruttani Highway (CTH) and will include the construction of three grade separators along the route. According to State Highways Chief Engineer S. Jawahar Muthuraj, “The pillars will be common for both the metro viaduct and the flyover. Land acquisition is currently underway.”
The three flyovers—located between
Ambattur Estate and Telephone Exchange,
Dunlop and Ambattur Suburban Station, and
Murugappa Polytechnic and KC Hospital—
have been merged with the metro project, as they fall within the same transport corridor.
While suburban trains remain the primary mode of transport beyond Avadi, CMRL plans to develop Avadi as a multi-modal transit hub. “The metro terminus and suburban railway station are located on either side of the CTH road, making it ideal for integrated development,” officials said. Discussions on co-developing the Avadi bus terminus are also expected to begin soon.
