Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has initiated critical testing and trial runs on a 10-kilometer stretch of Corridor 4 under its Phase-2 expansion. This segment runs from Poonamallee Bypass Metro Station, passes Mullai Thottam Metro Station, and ends at Porur Junction Metro Station, as confirmed in a recent official statement.
Although the corridor is designed for driverless train operations, the current trials are being conducted with drivers onboard. This approach allows CMRL to thoroughly assess the performance of both the new rolling stock and track systems during the early testing phase.
The tested stretch is directly connected to the Poonamallee Metro Depot, which functions as the primary hub for all testing and commissioning efforts in this phase. CMRL has adopted a phased strategy, with Stage 1 focusing on a series of rigorous tests to validate safety standards and ensure optimal passenger comfort.
This development marks a major milestone in expanding Chennai's metro network westward. CMRL’s emphasis on comprehensive testing—despite the advanced automation capabilities—reflects its strong commitment to delivering a safe, efficient, and future-ready transit system for the city’s residents.
