In the upcoming interim budget presentation scheduled for February 1, there is anticipation that the Central Government will unveil a new Delhi Metro corridor project connecting Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, according to a report by Moneycontrol on Thursday. The estimated budget for this project is Rs. 7,500 crore, and it is set to span from Rithala in Delhi to Kundli in Haryana. An official has confirmed that the detailed project report (DPR) has been submitted, and the project is currently in the final stages of the approval process.
This proposed project is the concluding corridor of the Delhi Metro's Phase IV initiative, complementing the existing five corridors: Janakpuri West to R.K Ashram, Tughlakabad to Delhi Aerocity, and Majlis Park to Maujpur, currently under implementation, as well as Inderlok - Indraprastha and Lajpat Nagar to Saket G Block.
The Delhi Metro Phase IV, which began its work in December 2019, faced setbacks due to the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020. In November, DMRC Chief Vikas Kumar indicated that the first section of the Phase IV corridor is expected to open by July 2024. He also mentioned that the entire Majlis Park-Maujpur corridor is planned to be operational by March 2025, along with a section of the Janakpuri West-R K Ashram Marg corridor.
As the Delhi Metro celebrates 21 years of operation since its inception in 2002, the network has significantly expanded, now encompassing 288 stations over a stretch of 393 km. Notably, the public transport system achieved a milestone on December 24, recording the highest-ever passenger journeys of 7 million on September 4 last year.
