Hinjewadi’s Fast Track: Metro Line 3 Gears Up for June Launch

The first phase of Pune Metro Line 3, covering the Maan–Hinjewadi to Shivajinagar stretch and comprising 12 stations, is likely to become operational by June, according to officials.

The Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) is targeting completion of the required works by the end of May, following a recent review meeting led by its newly appointed Commissioner, Abhijit Chaudhari.

Officials indicated that while 12 stations are expected to be ready by May-end, work on the remaining 11 stations is progressing simultaneously. The full 23.2-km elevated corridor is likely to be operational by September. However, delays in completing entry and exit points, along with associated passenger access infrastructure, have impacted progress at some stations.

PMRDA has directed the concessionaire, Tata Group, to expedite construction and adhere to timelines. The Metro Line 3 project—crucial for connectivity to Hinjewadi IT Park—is in its final stages, with approximately 94.2% of the work completed. Signalling trials and other inspections are currently underway.

During the review, Chaudhari assessed construction quality, technical challenges, and station readiness, instructing contractors to accelerate pending work. Priority is being given to completing station access, passenger amenities, and operational systems ahead of the planned June rollout.

Once operational, the corridor is expected to ease traffic congestion along the Hinjewadi–Shivajinagar route and significantly reduce commute times for thousands of IT professionals.

Reiterating the timeline, Chaudhari said PMRDA is working in mission mode, in line with directions from Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, to fast-track execution without compromising safety and quality.

However, some commuters remain sceptical about the June launch, citing potential delays due to the approaching monsoon season and pending works.
